Wimals Front contemplating 2009 elections
By Rathindra Kuruwita
National Freedom Front (NFF) will join forces
with the government in 2009 elections, if the political and
security situation demands them to do so, said NFF Chairman
MP Wimal Weerawansa.
2009 will be an election year since the duration of
Provincial Councils will end. So far, we have decided to compete
alone but we might think about joining forces with the government
if we feel that the countrys political and security
situation demands us to do so, Weerawansa said.
The NFF leader claimed that for the time being, they are thinking
of competing for upcoming elections on their own. He added
that presently they are making the necessary preparations
to face an election.
We are currently forming district and local council
level committees, organising the grass root members to face
an election. We are quiet confident that we can make a significant
impact in the upcoming elections, he said. But
if the security situation in the country forces us to support
the war effort, or, if the need arises to defeat the imperialistic
forces, we will then take a decision whether to support the
government, he added.
The government allocated Rs.1098 million for the Department
of Elections, raising speculations that a general election
would be held in 2009. Only Rs. 284.5 million was allocated
for the Department of Elections in 2008.
