Sharp
rise in Army recruitment
Army
recruitments have been on the rise, with a higher than expected
amount of young Sri Lankans approaching the Army each quarter.
We were expecting around 8,000 recruits in the quarter
from July to September; but we had a total of 10,136 new recruits
joining, Military Spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara
told The Bottom Line.
The
Army is targeting 14,000 more recruits for the quarter from
October to December. According to Nanayakkara, these new recruits
will undergo a 16 week basic training programme at the various
army camps across the country. They will then be posted to
their respective battalions for further specialised training
and then sent to the frontline.
Anyone who wants to join the army can enter one of our
camps and give the required information. They must have a
police report with them and we carry out the background checks
afterwards, he explained. Most of the recruits
to the army come from the North-Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa
and Southern Provinces. (NN)
