Petro
Lanka Dairies to set up BOI dairy farm in Meerigama
The Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka and Petro Lanka
(Pvt) Ltd entered into an agreement to establish a dairy farm
to produce milk to the local market last Friday.
Chairman and Director General, Dhammika Perera, signed the
agreement and formally presented the BOI Certificate of Registrations
to Managing Director- Petro Lanka Dairies, Lokitha Karavita.
The venture will establish a 100 cow herd dairy farm in Meerigama,
in the Uduulla area, Karavita stated The objective of
the project is primarily, to facilitate potential entrepreneurs
like me to provide an overview and awareness of dairy and
livestock farming in Sri Lanka. This project falls under Livestock
& Agriculture, which is one of the most demanding sectors
in Sri Lanka.
Agriculture is the main sector of the countrys economy
and provides employment to around 35% of the population. Milk
is the principal element of the livestock sector. Sri Lanka
produced around 190 million litres of milk in 2007, out of
which 60-70% was consumed locally.
I strongly feel that there is a greater requirement
and potential to improve the Agricultural sector in Sri Lanka.
My objective is to actively engage in the farming industry
to support the current supply needs of the country through
the latest farming methodology, Karavita stated.
The venture initially expects to produce 150,000 litres of
milk annually and increase production up to 300,000 litres
at a later stage. The dairy farm is an investment of US$ 150,000
and will create employment for 20.
Lokita Karavita and Director, Mahinda Liyanage, signed the
agreement on behalf of Petro Lanka Dairies (Pvt) Ltd
