Met Dept. allays fears of cyclone threat
By Dilukshi Thomas
There is no definite threat of a cyclone
to the island, says Meteorologist Chaminda De Silva of the
Department of Meteorology. He said that there was some speculation
earlier as to the development of a cyclone. However, after
observing the situation, the Meteorological Department, although
not completely certain of the outcome of the atmospheric disturbance,
said that it was most likely that there will be no cyclone.
De Silva explained that this area of atmospheric disturbance
is situated over the Bay of Bengal and is also one of low
pressure. He said that with regards to atmosphere, the lower
levels are usually susceptible to changes in wind speed and
pressure. This can be considered somewhat of a preliminary
phase, and we are yet to witness any significant changes.
De Silva said that the general public should not be alarmed
because since Sri Lanka is currently experiencing inter monsoon
conditions this type of phenomenon can be expected. Although
we cannot be a 100 percent certain that this atmospheric discrepancy
will develop into a cyclone, we are fairly confident that
the threat of cyclone will dissolve. De Silva also said
that the inter monsoon activity should reduce in approximately
two to three days.
