Raped German resident to be given ‘tourist’ privilege

The culprits behind the rape and robbery of the 80 year old German woman in Marawila are still at large while authorities claim that no new leads have emerged and are seeking public assistance.

Tourism Ministry Secretary George Micheal said that all efforts have been taken to find those responsible for the rapping.

In a bid to counter the adverse effects of the situation to Sri Lanka’s tourism Michael said that rapid action is being taken. Even though the German national was a permanent resident of Sri Lanka, Michael said that they are treating the case as they would a tourist. “We have informed the Tourist Police to take up the matter and use their resources to find the three men responsible.”

The German lady was a resident of a Marawila Resort and was subjected to the crime after she opened her house door to three men who claimed to be from the Police. They robbed her of Rs. 3 million worth of jewelry and raped her before fleeing the scene.
