Dredging work on for Colombo South Port’s breakwater


Constructions of the Colombo South Port, which is a leading development project launched by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is currently underway with the right schedules. Infrastructure development for the construction of break-water of the new port has almost been completed by now.

Currently, dredging for the construction of break-water is being carried out and further dredging and earth filling for the construction of yards facilities to assist the constructions of the break-water, commenced at an auspicious time on December 1 with the initiative of Port, Aviation, Irrigation and Water Management Minister Chamal Rajapaksa at the Colombo South Port site.

Hyundai Company has utilised a dredger of 27,000 cubic metres for the dredging and it is the world’s third biggest Trailer Suction Hopper dredger used in these types of activities. The Minister also held discussions with the officers of the Hyundai Company and the SLPA Chairman Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama about the progress of the Colombo South Port Development Project and also made an inspection tour of the site. The Minister also instructed to carry out constructions of the project without interruption and also thanked the Chairman and officers of SLPA for all the steps implemented in this regard up to now.

SLPA Managing Director Capt. Nihal Keppetipola, Director of the Colombo South Port Development Project, Chief Engineer Janaka Kurukulasooriya and a number of higher officers of SLPA also participated in this programme.
