Business
tycoon Nahil Wijeyasuriya, who never runs out of start
up ideas as well as strategic acquisitions which he
disposes at a profit, last week launched another venture
a new radio and TV station in style.
His East West Group floated a new subsidiary Peoples
Media Network, whose Radio 1 and TV 2 began broadcasting
from this week.
Nahils venture marks his return to the electronic
media after his launch of ETV, which at that time was
Sri Lankas first 24-hour TV station.
The investment in the new venture is estimated to be
around Rs. 120 million.
Why is he back? Nahil explained: Although there
are many local participants in the broadcasting industry,
we felt no one has taken the challenge and chance to
bring together the best of broadcasting as one package.
Everyone restricts themselves to one aspect of broadcasting:
but we go that extra mile in combining the expertise
of the cream of broadcasting with the quality of youthful
innovation, to show not only what broadcasting can do,
but the tremendous and particular potential of Sri Lankan
broadcasting.
While Radio 1 can be heard on 104.5 FM in Colombo, 99
down south and 95.5 in the hills, TV 2 can be tuned
on to TV on UHF 53.
Nahils son Vijitha is the Director Operations
of the Peoples Media Network. He said: We are
equipped with state-of-the-art conceptualisation, innovative
production, and an expert team of a number of famed
names and pioneers in the broadcasting industry. We
believe, by combining the creativity and experience
of so many great minds from the industry, we can offer
Sri Lankan viewers and listeners, the chance to experience
the true potential and life-changing impact of broadcasting,
and also show them the audio-visual difference when
a network is as dedicated to quality as we are.

In his characteristic fashion, Nahil also celebrated
the launch in style.
To mark the official launch of Radio 1, the Company
put a Rs.5 million cheque in the air for a lucky person
to find and claim the prize money.
Around 10,000 balloons were released Monday morning
at exactly 8.05am from 12 prominent roundabouts located
in Colombo City and the suburbs, to mark the official
launch of Radio One.
Inside one of these balloons was a cheque worth Rs.
5,000,000/ . The lucky person who finds this cheque,
can claim the prize of Rs.5,000,000/.
This is the largest promotion to ever be attempted
by any radio station in Sri Lanka. The whereabouts of
the balloon is unknown to anyone as the balloon was
filled with helium gas and was placed amongst at least
600 others and let off together into the air along with
the rest from one location, a spokesman for JWT
said.
Vijitha added that the Radio 1 decided to make an impact
on the broadcasting and entertainment arenas in Sri
Lanka. What better way to make an impact than
making someones day brighter with Rs 5 million?
The promotion is interactive and everyone has the equal
chance of winning as the balloon floated up into the
sky and is subject to an ACT OF GOD as to when and where
it may land, he added.
If one tunes into 104.5FM Radio One daily one can get
more clues as to the location from where the balloon
was launched, the metrological reports on the day of
launch etc.
In order to encash the cheque the winner should present
it to Peoples Media Network (Private) Limited, located
at 594/1, Galle Road, Colombo 3 on or before 10th December,
2008. This offer will not be valid after this date.
So be on the look out for the 5 Million Rupee Balloon
or even the cheque which could be lying anywhere in
Sri Lanka. Good luck Sri Lanka, and also Nahil!
