Army
creates football history

For the first time in local football history
Sri Lanka Army won a major tournament when they toppled
the golden boys of local soccer Ratnam SC by handing
out a two goals to one defeat in the final of the Dialog
league championship played at the CR&FC grounds
yesterday.
It was only the second occasion that an Army team had
managed to appear in a football final. Previously they
had qualified for the Vincent Perera Cup final way back
in 1985. For Ratnam, it must have been the shock of
their lives as they failed to defend their title for
the third successive year.
Ratnam
didnt do too many mistakes to be honest. They
had possession of the ball over sixty percent throughout
the game. But on the whole it was the day where the
soldiers could not put a foot wrong. They depicted the
powers of a true unit from the word go. Though they
failed to gain much control over the ball their strikers
were subtle enough to get the maximum advantage of the
few chances they received. Army SC was at full strength
as their left wing back Nirantha Perera had returned
to the side after a brief illness that caused him to
miss the semi-final.
