Govt.
wants to catch opposition off guard
The government is plotting to disrupt the no confidence motion
presented by the United National Party said its General
Secretary Tissa Attanayake. He added that in a sudden move
the Government proposed to discus the motion in Parliament
this week as opposed to the third week requested by the UNP.
We have to go for this prepared and everyone agreed
to have this discussion on the third week. But all of a sudden
the government said today that they want to discuss it in
Parliament this week, Attanayake said. This was
not in the parliamentary agenda for this week and we were
strongly against this, he added.
The UNP General Secretary added that the Opposition leader
plans to present the motion and since he has already made
other crucial plans this week. By forwarding the debate for
this week the government plans to catch the opposition off
guard and use the Kilinochchi victory for its advantage.
We see that the government is up to its old tricks.
When this proposal was brought during the party leaders meeting
in the Parliament Complex yesterday we expressed our staunch
opposition, he said. We will not let the government
take the motion for debate this week, he added.
Meanwhile Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana claimed
that the Government is not intimidated or threatened by the
no confidence motion. He added that the vast majority of the
people are behind the UPFA government.
We have a vast majority in parliament and our standing
with the people is stronger than ever, he said. That
is why the government said it is ready to debate this issue
anytime, he added.
