SLT empowers Sri Lanka Police to strengthen national security

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the nation’s number one integrated communications service provider will be the communication service provider to the Sri Lanka Police Department which heads and monitors social security. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Lanka Police, to provide a total voice communication solution. It features a state-of-the-art PABX infrastructure with inter branch calling facility at a minimal cost among police stations through out the island.

Speaking on the significance of the agreement, Mrs. Leisha De Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson, SLT said, “This is a momentous occasion for Sri Lanka Telecom, who, as the exclusive service provider to the Sri Lanka Police, will be providing them with a comprehensive communication solution. We have always had very close associations with state institutions and departments such as the Police, since we share the same ideology of providing a service to the nation. This intimate association with each other has resulted in SLT being able to set up the recently built infrastructure, which incorporates the best of today’s cutting edge technology, for the Police Department. This is also a testament of how SLT has reached out to state institutions, to fulfill whatever communication facilities they need”.

Adding on, Jayantha Wickramaratna, Inspector General of Police said, “SLT has been the exclusive telecommunication network to Sri Lanka Police since its inception. We are extremely pleased to have SLT continue to partner with us and provide assistance, especially as a beneficiary of being powered by the best service supplier in the industry. This is part of several projects that we are working, in terms of further streamlining and upgrading our communication network with the best available technology. This will ensure that we are able to serve the public better.”

SLT has already planned the highly secure and reliable data network to Sri Lanka Police which is very much needed for the department’s operations. With this total communication solution, SL Police Department will be able to enjoy high speed broadband internet and IP/VPN connectivity to police stations island-wide via a total data communication network and super fast Metro Ethernet connectivity to the Police Headquarters. This agreement is projected to cut down costs whilst increasing productivity, as a direct cost saving measure for Sri Lanka Police, due to inter-branch voice communication at minimal cost. This is will result in cost effective real time communication. It will also make operations smoother by facilitating communication and information sharing among police stations.

The solution will bring immense freedom to the Sri Lanka Police to concentrate on its core duties that are to do with national interest, especially in establishing a peaceful society in liberated areas in the Northern and Eastern provinces of the country.

In addition to this, there will be a provision to introduce a Closed Circuit Television Surveillance System to strengthen the national security in Colombo City as well as other main cities. An Automated Finger Print Identification System to track criminals efficiently, as well as the establishment of Crime Scene Labs in all Police Stations will also be in place. Also, the solution will enable a centralised information database to be maintained which will support investigations and Intelligence.

SLT is immensely happy to be an integral part of the modernisation program that has been undertaken and it is the singular hope of the company that the Police Department will become the role model for excellence in this region.
