The
second evening was the Soul Sounds conducted by Prof.
Mark Wilson accompanied by Soundarie David, who is the
force behind the singers, Neranjan de Silva and Christo
Prins performed at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. Once again
the performers got a standing ovation after an exhilarating
performance. The opening My Eternal King
was an exuberant performance which literally brought
the house down if the applause was anything to go by.
This was followed by Amazing Grace with Mark leading
the singing and displaying the variations of the song
from the era when his grandmother sang it to now, he
made more enjoyable by asking the audience to join in.
There were several soloist who sang their numbers with
aplomb, among them Shehara Liyanage,Dinuska Jayawickrema
and Aajanee Jayasooriya, all of whom are Sopranos, and
Shyana Perera who was soloist for the song How
beautiful After the intermission was Dineshini
Jayawardene and Andrea Melder Labrooy, with Hes
Blessing Me by Norris Garner for which the soloist
was Professor Mark Wilson.
Prof. Wilson extracted the best from the choir with
some energetic conducting and with his lithe movements
and flexibility which convinced me that he must be a
good dancer as well.
Gathered to listen to and join Soul Sound in song were
many personalities from the world of the arts among
who were Noeline Honter, Jerome de Silva, Joan Forbes,
Raneee Rajapakse, Charmaine and Ricky Mendis, Nela de
Zoysa and Nelum, and just lovers of music and song.
Rohini Pandithage Romani Sagadevan , Therese Selvaratnam
and prima ballerina Upekha de Silva. The only drawback
was the fact that we had to look for nearly two and
a half hours at the blazing red costumes the singers
wore which was certainly hard on the eyes. Soul Sounds
choir are the winners of the Gold Medals at the World
Choir Games held in Graz, Austria in 2008.
