Co-Chairs tells LTTE to give in

  • Govt and rebels urged to declare “no fire period”
  • “Just and lasting political solution” reiterated as way out of conflict

The Tokyo Co-Chairs, namely Norway, Japan, the United States and the European Union yesterday called on the LTTE to discuss means with the government to lay down arms, renounce violence and accept the government’s amnesty.

They also strongly urged both parties to declare a “no fire period” for the evacuation of trapped civilians.

Dreams are finally coming true for 19-year old R. Anushangan from St. John’s College, Jaffna. Having come first in Jaffna District’s Advanced Level Commerce stream but denied entry into the top local universities in the South, he found new opportunities getting a 55% scholarship at Otterbein College, a private liberal arts school in Ohio, USA with the help of Guidance Counselor and foreign university placement advisor Priyanthi Dissanayake.

The IMF aims to double the amount of money it has available to lend to governments to $500 billion to strengthen international confidence that it can meet any new challenges during the current global downturn, in case more countries are forced to turn to the 185-member institution to borrow, the deputy head of the IMF said.
