Pathetic Sri Lanka surrenders series

By Sa’adi Thawfeeq
Pathetic was how one could describe Sri Lanka’s performance at the R Premadasa Stadium under lights yesterday when they surrendered the five-match one-day international series to India who with their 147-run victory hold onto an unbeatable 3-0 lead.

Sri Lanka went into the match knowing that this was a must win match for them. But the manner in which they trooped out after captain Mahela Jayawardene had lost his third consecutive toss of the series there was a hint of surrender. Their body language did not show they were up for the challenge for there was no spring in their step nor was there the usual exuberance which was lacking.

Sri Lanka failed to capitalise on a good start when they snapped up two early Indian wickets for 24 runs in the fourth over but yet allowed them the luxury of scoring an imposing 363-5, which was the highest ever total made at this venue in 86 ODIs. Their ground fielding and catching went to pieces and the bowling was wayward to say the least as Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh later followed by MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan flayed the Lankan bowling to all parts of the ground to make it a virtual no-contest.
