Civilian cost
Hospital workers attend to injured children brought to the main hospital in Anuradapura. The military said a total of 19 people were killed and 75 wounded when Tamil Tigers opened fire on them. The victims were among some 1,000 civilians who escaped from Tamil rebel-held territory amid gun fire from the guerrillas who have been trying to hold some 100,000 civilians hostage as security forces keep up a major offensive to crush the guerrillas.
