Indian Medical Team off to Pulmodai today

The special eight member medical team from India will leave to Pulmodai today in order to establish an emergency medical unit, including a hospital in Pulmodai supplementing the existing Health Ministry facilities there.

The team which arrived on board a special chartered flight in two batches on Monday and Tuesday, comprise of eight highly experienced physicians, surgeons, para-medical and technical staff. The team will be carrying necessary equipment and medicine required by an emergency unit including equipment related to x-rays and lab. The Medical Unit is due to be opened by Friday (13). The Medical Unit established in Pulmodai will mean a shorter route to medical access to civilians in urgent need of medical assistance and who have to be taken to Trincomalee if not. They will also provide humanitarian relief and medical care to the IDPs from the North.

The team is also bringing along a consignment of medicines urgently needed by health workers in the North, worth close to Rs. 70 million, and handing them over to the Health Ministry on behalf of the Government of India.
