The Bottom Line visited Salon Crimpers this week to talk about the latest hair trends and hair remedies. Tucked away in a quiet corner in the Nawala Road, this small boutique salon serves a very limited clientele.

Following are the tips that its proprietor Pushpa Gunawardena gave to clear out the common hair care dilemmas:

Q: What are the new hair trends for 2009?
A: Big bumpy curls are back in fashion this year. But the styles seem to range in a combination of sleek, straight hair at the top with curled ends. That is how most prefer and that is the latest trend. Also the styles are very casual and messy looks are trendier than very sophisticated, sleek styles. For examples the chignons are very popular even among celebrities.

Hair colours cannot be categorised as such, because the colour should be decided according to each individual’s complexion and their preference. But overall, the colours that seem to be used most are the brown hues; mostly burgundy and mahogany. Teens tend to go for much brighter colours like reds and oranges. But most colours, which are for everyday wear purposes range mostly among browns which are about one or two shades lighter than the natural hair color.

Q: What hair care tips would you give for hair which is treated with chemicals (rebonding, colouring and perming)?
A: Using a quality shampoo and conditioner is very important for such hair. Exposing hair to chemicals can dry the hair very quickly and that can result in hair loss. The shampoo should be very mild because if the shampoo is very coarse that can double the dryness. It is better if the shampoo and the conditioner are of the same brand. But since the basic ingredients of both products are the same, it does not make much of a difference. Conditioning such hair is very important since that is the main method to prevent dryness of hair caused by these chemicals.

Q: What type of treatment would you suggest for someone suffering from premature hair loss?
A: If it is hereditary, there is nothing treatments can do since it is genetic. Other reasons which can cause hair loss are stress, dandruff and lack of vitamins and nutrients which help hair growth.

Treatments which stimulate the scalp are vital for such cases. The basic treatment which can be practised at home is treating the scalp with an oil; olive, coconut or even almond. The oil should be applied on the scalp and massaged well for about ten or fifteen minutes and then it should be washed off. Oiling the hair and leaving it on for several days can result in dandruff since oil can accumulate dust and dirt.

Q: Could you suggest a home remedy for the maintenance of hair?
A: The egg mask is very advisable to obtain shiny, sleek hair. An egg white separated from the yolk should be applied all over the hair. Afterwards a warm towel should be wrapped for about ten minutes. Then wash off the mask. This is very good for dry and unmanageable hair since the mask moisturises and adds extra shine to the hair.

Q: What makes your salon stand out from the other establishments?
A: Well, that question would be better answered by our customers. However, from the comments we receive, they seem to be really happy with our services. Our staff is very friendly and easy going, so the customers feel very comfortable with them. Our friendly approach and quality services are what I think they prefer about us most.
