There was pomp and pageantry in the Oak Room of the
Cinnamon Grand when the Zonta Club 1 of Colombo recognized
the Woman of Achievement 2009. The event organsied by
Ramola Sivasunderam and her team presented a show compered
admirably by Savithri Rodrigo, which gets ever better
through the passing years. The only drawback this year
was the fact that certain categories were awarded to
those who had no right to them, when there are many
more who qualify for that particular award, unlike in
the bygone days during the initial period with Mano
Muthukrishna Candappa as the Founder President, and
the many years after where there was never a controversy
over the recipient of an award.
This is an event that never lets one down when it comes
to fashion and style as demonstrated by the many distinguished
women present. Outstanding in dignified elegance were
Kishani Jayasinghe Wijayasekera who tied with Soundarie
David in the Creative Arts and Performing Category,
and Kirmarli Fernando who tied for the award for Banking
with W.A. Nalini. Amal Goonetilleke who won the award
for Tourism favoured a handloom saree.
Among the guests and supporters of the winners cutting
a dash was Mersumi Andriesz in a white dress that had
to be a designer gown, Shivani Thambiayah in a blue
dress, while saree wearers that made fashion news were
Janet Balasuriya, daughters Charmaine and Shireene,
Swarna Ameratunge in a florally embroidered white Kandyan,
Upeka de Silva the Prima Ballerina in black and Anusha
David. In addition there was a galaxy of women who won
awards for their dress sense, too numerous to mention.
Soul sounds the all girl choir provided the entertainment.
