Chamani requires immediate surgery – Dr Kannangara

Dhammika Ratnaweera reporting from Sydney
Sri Lanka’s renowned sports medicine doctor in Sydney Dr Siri Kannangara has said that Sri Lankan women’s cricket vice captain Chamani Seneviratna would require immediate surgery on the damaged ligaments of her left knee.

Dr Kannangara, consultant physician of rheumatology and sports medicine told ‘The Bottom Line’ that unless Chamani undergoes surgery she will not be able to continue her cricket career.

“If she undergoes surgery in Sydney she has time to recover very soon within three days but she will be off the field for nearly six months from the date of surgery,” said Dr Kannangara.

Chamari was injured in the practice game against Australia and has been ruled out of the World Cup.

Dr Kannangara is very famous in Sydney for sports medicine and normally most Sri Lankan sportsmen and women go to him for important advice and for treatment of injuries. Olympic bronze medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe has been treated on several occasions by Dr Kannangara. “I am always keen to give my services to the Sri Lankans and I like do something for my country,” he said.
