Pillay pledges to push for human rights monitors
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Dr. Navi Pillay said that she has asked the Sri Lankan government to allow human rights monitors there but she has not got any response from Sri Lanka.
“I have asked the Sri Lanka government to allow human rights monitors there. I have not got any response. I am going to press for that,” the UNHR Chief told the reporters in India.
Pillay raised the Sri Lankan issues during her discussion with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Monday. “Our view is that you can never succeed through military solution and the problem can be solved politically,” she said.
She said the UN wants the Lankan government to ensure safety of civilians.
Last week, the executive director of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Ann Veneman said the relentless war in the Northern Sri Lanka killed hundreds of children and thousands of children were injured in this year alone. The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Navi Pillay also last week said that Safe Zone shelling killed at least 2800 civilians and over 7000 civilians were wounded from January 20 to March 10, 2009 alone.
