The Supreme Court yesterday granted leave to proceed with a Fundamental Right Application filed in the public interest on behalf of all disable persons in the country.
The Petitioner Ajith C. S. Perera is a Chartered Chemist who specialised in the fields of Analytical Chemistry and quality assurance with academic and professional qualifications from Sri Lanka and England. He is also a former senior cricket umpire. The petitioner said that he was left unemployed, with poor financial prospects despite his qualifications after an accident left him paralysed.
The petition stressed that although there were several legislations passed by the parliament to provide relief to disable persons, their mobility was still severely restricted since those legislations are not implemented.
The Petitioner urged the court to implement those legislations by giving the necessary directives to authorities, Cabinet of Ministers, Chief Ministers who were made respondents from this application.
The petitioner stated that there were thousands of disabled persons in the country who were either disabled at birth or due to accidents. He also said that armed force personnel have scarified their limbs for the security of the country and nation.
The bench comprised of Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and Justice PA Ratnayaka.
