Measures to
fortify Northern
Passenger
Transport Service
The Ministry of Transport has taken measures to streamline the northern transportation service while adding another 125 passenger transport buses to the existing fleet. The Ministry is also expecting contributions from the private passenger transportation for the A9 and A32 routes.
Sri Lanka Transport Board will immediately commence the Jaffna-Colombo -A9 passenger transportation service when the route permission is granted for passenger transportation, the Ministry announced yesterday. The Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu depots, damaged due to LTTE activities in these areas for over past two decades will be refurbished to cater to the present day passenger needs while providing a new sub depot at Silawathura.
The Minister of Transport, Dullas Allahapperuma has instructed ministry officials to provide these buses to Navatkuli, Kankesanthurai, Vavuniya, and Mannar depots.
The government has imported 2500 buses from India which are already deployed to strengthen the passenger transport service island wide.
