Kapu ideal player for the shorter
version says coach
Sri Lanka’s Academy and Development coach Sumithra Warnakulasuriya is of the opinion that a batsman in the style of Chamara Kapugedera is best suited for the limited overs and Twenty20 game.
“You can get the maximum out of Chamara’s batting in the limited overs and Twenty20 games because he has the ability to score quick runs,” said Warnakulasuriya after Kapugedera’s 150-ball innings of 115 for Sri Lanka Cricket XI against the touring Pakistan team on the second day at the Colts grounds yesterday.
“Chamara would be the ideal player for this type of cricket because he is a fine striker of the ball,” said Warnakulasuriya.
Along with Kapugedera, the other centurion for the home side was former Sri Lanka under 19 World Cup batsman Lahiru Thirimanne who struck an elegant 116 off 171 balls after Sri Lanka Cricket XI had lost an early wicket in the eighth over.
“Thirimanne is one of the up-and-coming cricketers at the top level. He is a very compact player with a good defence and the ability to bat for long periods. He can also work the ball around for runs and put away the loose deliveries, which gives him good balance in his batting. He is ideal for the longer game but with his technique he will also get runs in the shorter version as well,” said Warnakulasuriya. – [ST]
