Holy Family, Maliyadeva dominate at netball

Holy Family Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala and Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya Wennappuva dominated the Milo Schools Netball Championships district level tournaments held at Kurunegala and Puttalam respectively.
Holy Family Balika Vidyalaya narrowly missed making a clean sweep of the Kurunegala district tournament when they won three of the four finals and finished runner-up in the first.
They won the under 14, 16 and 18 championships by beating Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala 11 – 4, 21 – 12 and 47 – 45.
Holy Family Balika was deprived of a win in the under-12 final where they were beaten 11 – 10 by Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya.
The tournament was held at the Parakramabahu National School grounds, Polgahawela where 88 teams took part in the four age categories. It was organised by the Provincial Sports Education Ministry.
Holy Family Balika Vidyalaya, Wennappuva ‘A’ team won the under-14 final beating their ‘B’ side 3–1 while they also pocketed the under-18 championship beating St. Sebastian MMV, Katuneriya 17 – 6.
Dankotuwa Balika MV, Dankotuwa and Ananda National School, Chilaw however defeated Holy Family Balika ‘A’ team bagging the under-12 championship 5 – 4 and under 16 championship 9 – 8.
A total of 85 teams took part from the Puttalam district in the four age categories where the tournament was held at the Sir Albert Pieris grounds, Wennappuwa. It was organised by the assistant educational director of Physical Education, Puttalam Educational Zone, H.M.Ajith Chandrakumara.
The overall tournament championship was won by Holy Family Balika 44 – 20 with Dankotuwa Balika as runners-up.
The event was graced by the chairman of the Schools Netball Association in Puttalam, Krishanthi Perera.
