Stafford Motors regains MCA cricket Sixes

Stafford Motors led by Sukhitha Peiris regained the MCA Cricket Sixes title beating LB Finance in the final at the MCA grounds on Sunday. Stafford Motors won the tournament in 2007 beating East West Marketing and last year they finished runners-up behind SriLankan Airlines.
At the completion of the round-robin stage on Saturday the top eight teams to qualify for the quarter-finals were: Stafford Motors from Group ‘A’, Alpha Orient Lanka from Group ‘B’, Hirdaramani Industries from Group ‘C’, ETI from Group ‘D’, LB Finance from Group ‘E’, Sierra Global from Group ‘F’, McCallum Cargo from Group ‘G’ and Janashakhi Group from Group ‘H’.
Results from quarter-finals onwards: QF1: Alpha Orient Lanka 35/4 (5) lost to Stafford Motors 39/1 (3); QF2: Hirdaramani 26/5 (4.3) lost to ETI 27/1 (3.3); QF3: Sierra Global 35/5 (4.3) lost to LB Finance 36/2 (3.5); QF4: Janashakthi 67/2 (5) lost to McCallum Cargo 68/1 (4.4); SF1: Stafford Motors 60/2 (5) beat ETI 46/4 (5); SF2: LB Finance 50/3 (5) beat McCallum Cargo 16/5 (2.4).
The feature of the tournament was the elimination of two fancied teams Unichela, being beaten by LB Finance in the league stage and Janashakthi beaten by McCallum Cargo in the quarter-finals.
The Final: LB Finance 38/5 (5) (Roshane Silva 16, Charith Wathuregama 10, Buddhika Ranaweera 2/6, Rakhitha Rajkumar 1/5, Amal Athulathmudali 1/6) lost to Stafford Motors 41/2 (3.5) (Amal Athulathmudali 25, Charith Wathuregama 1/4, Charith Fernando 1/14).
Special Awards: Best Bowler – Charith Wathuregama from LB Finance; Best Batsman and most number of Sixes in the tournament (10): Anil de Mel from McCallum Cargo; Best Fielder – Sanjeya Gangodawila from Stafford Motors;
Man of the Final: Amal Athulathmudali from Stafford Motors. Janashakthi’s Muthumudalige Pushpakumara won the Lankem Robbialac Rainbow award for the best six of the tournament. All in all 99 sixes were hit during the two days of the tournament.
At the post tournament awards presentation MCA officials Wasanthalal Fernando, Sujeewa de Silva, Sanjaya Wijesinghe and Ameer Muthuwappa gave away the awards. – [LW]
