Himalayan delights
Nepali cuisine comes to town
 |
For the first time in Sri Lanka, the flavour and charm of the mountainous nation of Nepal is here in Colombo! From spicy salads to tangy soups, flavoured rice to delicious meats, experience a new range of cuisine at the Nepalese Food Promotion held at the Cinnamon Grand till July 12.
Organised in association with the Nepalese Embassy, Chefs Yuba and Shiyam who were flown in especially for the promotion has created a plethora of mouthwatering dishes, served in traditional Nepali styles. With wooden pagoda style roofs at the Atrium Café providing an ambience straight out of a scene from Shangri-la, it is almost like stepping into the Himalayan foothills as you savour the flavours of Nepali cuisine.
Rice is extensively used in Nepali food, but spices play an important role. The most popular dish in Nepal is the ‘dhal bhat’ which is a rice soup with lentils and spices and is a satisfyingly warm meal on a cold day, while ‘momos’, a meat dumpling snack served with spicy soups and a tangy tomato dip is also a personal favourite. Nepali cuisine also incorporates a lot of meat and a fowl roasting over an open flame is one of the highlights of the evening. The desserts too are scrumptious with an array of tropical fruits nicely complementing the more traditional sweets of this culture filled land. Savour all these and more while you meet the chefs themselves at the Cinnamon Grand from 7 pm to 11 pm till July 12.
