Integration, infrastructure key to post-war success
Effective integration of North and East and its people with rest of the country and good infrastructure were stressed as critical for Sri Lanka to succeed in fully harnessing the post-war opportunity.
This was perhaps the most often stressed message at the two and half day Ceylon Chamber of Commerce-organised Sri Lanka Economic Summit titled ‘The Dawning of a new era- Opportunities and Challenges,’ which concluded last week in Colombo. Participants as well as many speakers agreed that Sri Lanka stands on the brink of rapid economic growth, but challenges remain in integration and infrastructure which may hinder progress.
The Summit brought together the stakeholders of Sri Lanka’s future, from policy makers to business leaders in order to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the country at present.
While all agreed that the country must aim for a growth of 10% of GDP while attracting foreign investors and reconstructing and integrating the North and East, there were many challenges identified in the process. (NN)
