No alliance symbol decided; Mangala

UNP Steering Committee to meet today

The United National Party (UNP) Political Committee, which is to meet today, will be presented with a committee report that was formulated with the view of rejuvenating the party.
The Committee headed by Party Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama Perera had formulated this report with the intention of re-establishing the UNP as a “winning party” while contesting singly sources reported. However this was before the decision was taken to form an alliance. The UNP Steering Committee will also meet today.
Sources also noted that the decisions regarding the Alliance which would be reached at the Political Committee would be discussed at the evening meeting of the Steering Committee. Meanwhile, SLFP (M) Leader Mangala Samaraweera at a press conference noted that no plans were underway to change the symbol of the Alliance into a “milk pot” and that no final decision had been made regarding fielding of a common candidate should a Presidential Election be called. He insisted that at the moment the main focus of the Alliance was to “oil the machinery needed to win an election.”
“These reports are all regarding the government going “potty” over the threat of a new alliance. They must all admit that it is the biggest threat to them at the moment,” he said.
