100 migrant workers from Kuwait to arrive today
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) announced that a contingent of 100 migrant workers from Kuwait will be arriving in the country today.
According to SLBFE, another group of 68 migrant workers had also arrived from Kuwait yesterday. “These individuals have been in the detention camps of the Sri Lankan Embassy for quite sometime and they are now being brought back to the country,” explained SLBFE Spokesman A. Bopitiya.
According to Bopitiya some 3,000 Sri Lankans are currently working in Kuwait and Bopitiya added that these contingents are results of various problems which occur repetitively. “Some have faced several serious problems while some others have faced common complications such as non-payment of salaries and arrests,” added Bopitiya.
He referred to measures of sending trained labour overseas, particularly in the medical sector as being the most effective method of solving this issue. Despite crackdowns on fraudulent foreign employment agencies and attempts to upgrade the skill levels of these migrant workers, instances of mistreatment were still frequent, he added.
The migrant workers who arrived in the country yesterday morning were sent home from the airport by the SLFBE.
