$ 2.5b IMF windfall boosts Sri Lanka

In what could be the biggest international vote of confidence on Sri Lanka in general and the government in particular, the IMF yesterday confirmed a US$ 2.5 billion support package for the country to boost foreign reserves, rebuild the North East and rejuvenate the economy.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who kicked off Government’s local polls campaign in the Uva Province during the weekend received slew of jubilant greetings and affection from the people proving his ever rising popularity. Yesterday’s breakthrough in Sri Lanka securing a higher IMF support of US$ 2.5 billion will prove his and Lankan critics wrong. This vote of confidence on the government is expected to further strengthen Rajapaksa’s popularity. Here the President is being greeted by the Ranaviru families in Uva Wellassa while yesterday in Moneragala he urged all communities to engage in the development process.
