GMOA tells Minister to lend a ear
August 31 2009 5.10pm: The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) and Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva are at loggerheads following comments made by the latter at a recent media briefing.
Referring to the incident of a beautician from Ratnapura dying following an operation at the Kalubowila hospital, GMOA Secretary B. Gunasekera insisted that the Minister should not have insinuated that the doctor who performed the operation was at fault before a full investigation was completed. He also insisted that the Minister should be guided by a commission of specialist doctors in this issue.
Recalling that the operation in question was not of experimental nature and had been performed numerous times without mishap he cautioned the Minister against making statements simply to gain publicity and to complete the investigations as soon as possible.
