The Trans Asia Hotel took its place in the prestigious Cinnamon brand of hotels and resorts, opening its doors as the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo on Monday.
Chairman of John Keells Holdings, Susantha Ratnayake, said he was proud to add another “world class product” to the Cinnamon brand. The hotel was closed for three months for the transition and refurbishment, and Ratnayake stated it was a remarkable feat that its management together with it consultants had turned the property around within such a short span.
John Keells has invested up to Rs. 500 million in refurbishing the hotel, which whilst positioned as a premium location would cater to multiple tiers of the market.

Ajit Gunewardene, Deputy Chairman of John Keells Holdings, told The Bottom Line that his company firmly believes Cinnamon Lakeside would complement the Cinnamon Grand, which is acknowledged as the best 5-Star hotel in the city. “This experience will be at the now renowned Cinnamon standard. The standards we have set in product and service at both these properties will make them the destination of choice for the discerning customer. The prospects are excellent for both properties. It is very likely that the demand for high-quality hotel facilities in the city will increase significantly in the coming months,” he added.
Ratnayake remarked that the Cinnamon brand hotels together with other city properties would reap the tourism benefits of post-conflict Sri Lanka, and amused about the many aspersions that were cast back then on its decision to invest on rebranding. Together with the 500-room Cinnamon Grand Colombo, the John Keells Group offers the business traveller a unique environment within the city.
Probably the most distinctive characteristic of Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo is the fact that it borders the Beira Lake, giving guests an opportunity to enjoy an unparalleled al fresco dining experience in the heart of the busy, bustling city of Colombo.
Indulgence is the key to everything the hotel offers and the changes brought about by the renovation are no exception. They include new restaurants, a classy bar, and refurbished rooms with a stunning view of the lake, décor in warm, earthy hues that are sure to make you unwind; and even a new monthly newsletter, The Grapevine!
The hotel’s main lobby sees a significant change with brand-new flooring, walls and furniture, creating an atmosphere of warmth coupled with a delightful interplay of light and shadow. The ballroom has been restored to its original glory with stunning chandeliers and new carpet and furnishings.
The Azmaara Spa is the latest addition to the Cinnamon Lakeside’s guest facilities.
One of the main changes in the restaurants would be to North, the new restaurant and bar, offering both a stylishly casual al fresco dining experience by the Beira Lake and an air- conditioned exclusive indoor bar. Also new are The Dining Room, a chic, 24-hour coffee shop that offers both international and Asian fare; and The Lounge, the lobby lounge, with its daily, mouth-watering High Tea, varied entertainment and dessert trolley each night.
The popular Royal Thai, Long Feng, Pool Bar and The Library would function as usual.
The Cinnamon Lakeside has arranged a host of activities and events throughout the week to celebrate its inception. Patrons would enjoy a 30 per cent discount on dining at all restaurants this week, whilst award-winning local and international bands and artistes will entertain guests as they indulge.
The 7 (degrees) North will offer some sizzling Mediterranean cocktails and delights, plus, a 25 per cent discount on all beverages at the Mid-Week Quencher every Wednesday evening.
