Muthiah Muralitharan loss for Sri Lanka |
Off spinner Muthiah Muralitharan has been ruled out of the two back-to-back Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand starting today at the R Premadasa Stadium. He is also in danger of missing out on the one-day tri-series involving India and New Zealand after straining his right groin on the fifth and final day of the second Test at the SSC on Sunday.
Sri Lanka team manager Brendon Kuruppu said that Muralitharan was definitely out of the two T20 Internationals and may also miss the first match of the one-day tri-series against New Zealand on September 8.
“Murali is out of action for two weeks and at the moment it is very unlikely he will play in the first match of the tri-series. It is too early to assess at this stage whether he will be available for the entire series. We need him for the Champions trophy,” said Kuruppu.
Muralitharan is not the only casualty for Sri Lanka. Left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara has also been advised to rest by the team physio.
