Sri Lanka’s candidate for Miss World 2009 will leave to London this weekend for a month long session of training, grooming, mini competitions and making friends before the pageant goes on the boards on December 12 at Johannesburg, South Africa.
Sri Lankan born Gamya Wijayadasa emerged as the winner of Derana Veet Miss Sri Lanka 2009 and secured herself a spot at one of the most prestigious and demanding beauty contests in the world. The 23-year-old studied at Musaeus College till she was 11 before leaving to Singapore to continue her studies. Currently residing in Australia she came back to her motherland to participate in the pageant and the judges were immediately dazzled by her beauty, intelligence and inborn talent.
Gamya is determined to win the title for Sri Lanka and she appeals to the people of the country to support her in anyway they can. The Miss World competition does not merely judge the contestant, but looks at how popular she is in her home country through online polls, forums and blogs. “Miss World wants to see how many Sri Lankans are behind their chosen Miss Sri Lanka,” one of Gamya’s blogs declare while adding, “They look at how many events, fund raisers, community work Miss Sri Lanka has done along with how much each candidate can impress a global representative within a 5 second interaction.” Obviously, first impressions are crucial.
Organised by the Miss World Organisation, the 59th Miss World pageant, will be held on December 12 at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa with over 120 beautiful contestants expected from across the globe. On November 10, 2009, the contestants will travel to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from where they will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa on November 15. Last year’s crowning beauty, Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia will crown her successor at the end of this event as the global ambassador for beauty.
Since its launch in 1951, the Miss World Organisation has raised more than £250 million for children’s charities and the reigning queen is expected to reside in London during her reign.
