A road of war and peace
The much awaited film of the decade “The Road from Elephant Pass” depicting the love story between a LTTE cadre and a Sri Lankan Army captain has finally arrived at cinemas countrywide.
The media hailed it as the ‘movie of the decade’ as the theme was very current given that hostilities have now come to an end and a story of this nature will bring together the communities of Sri Lanka as it enables the understanding of the conflict from different perspectives.
It was ironic that this film produced during war times was written by Nihal de Silva who died tragically in a claymore landmine explosion by the LTTE at Wilpattu National Park in May 2006. A two minute silence was introduced in his honor before the screening began to a packed audience of media personnel.
Producer and Director of the film Chandran Rutnam said that this film was something he always wanted to produce as the book was accepted by the general public and also won the Gratiaen prize for literature in 2003 and it was a pity that the author was not alive to see the final outcome of the movie.
Associate Producer of the film Alston Koch said in a speech that “the film sends an important message to a world torn apart by religious and political agendas that love breaks all barriers and that ‘Might is not right, but Might ‘for’ right always works.”
The actors include Joe Abeywickreme, Sanath Gunatileke, Iranganie Serasinghe, Veena Jayakody and two relatively unknown actors in the main roles in Ashan Dias and Suranga Ranawaka.
Already receiving positive reviews the movie has all the indications of a hit.
