Over 4 000 imprisoned deserters released on special pardon
Over 4 000 army personnel who had illegally left their positions have been released on a special pardon by the government.
Parliament was told by Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunewardene that 136 officers and 4355 personnel of other ranks of the Sri Lanka Army who were in prison after deserting their posts prior to May 19 of this year have been released under a special pardon.
The data was released in response to a question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake and Gunewardene added that no member of the navy or air force was imprisoned for abandoning their post.
