Says children’s lives disrupted and seeks legal redress
UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara yesterday staged a protest near Parliament accompanied by his wife and three children to seek redress for his burnt house in Chilaw.
Holding out two banners with his family Bandara engaged in a Satyagraha alleging that police were not conducting investigations into the matter.
He noted that despite repeated complaints and even the handing over of photographs and names of suspects no inquiry had been instigated by the police and as such no legal redress could be sought by him.
“My children have nothing. They have no way of going to school and their lives have been terribly disrupted by the attack on our home. This is the last straw. If nothing is done then there is little recourse for us but to end up living on the street,” he said.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe criticised non-action by the government and insisted that such avoidance of investigation was a clear blow to the democracy of Sri Lanka.
“We have repeatedly raised this issue in parliament and even appealed to the Speaker to take action against this blatant disregard for law and order. However all our appeals to date have fallen on deaf ears,” said the Opposition Leader.
Bandara had earlier caused a furore in parliament by displaying posters of his burnt home in front of his seat sparking strong protest in government ranks and resulting in parliament being suspended twice during one session.
