SEC to slash brokerage fee

Crucial meeting to be held today with stockbrokers

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) is seriously looking at slashing the brokerage fee substantially in a bid to lure more foreign investors to the Colombo bourse that was rated as the second best performing market, globally in 2009.

Public debt up by 4% in 2009

The overall debt to GDP ratio, which had continued to decline from over 100% prior to 2005 to below 82% by 2008 has again shot up by around 4% to 86.3% during 2009, recent statistics issued by the Ministry of Finance and Planning has showed. According to the Ministry, the increase in the debt ratio was due to the more than planned borrowings during the year and less than projected-nominal growth in GDP.

People’s Bank goes live in the
Northern peninsula

People’s Bank (PB), Sri Lanka’s Best Loved Bank, has gone live with integrated core banking systems to support its retail and corporate banking operations. The bank went live in 16 branches across the Northern peninsula, bringing its total number connected through the system to 500 - out of a total of 650 branches island-wide. This is the first implementation phase of the project. Further phased roll outs will see a speedy conversion of all other branches within the next quarters of 2010.
